Pastel de Nata
Portugal’s legendary egg custard tarts– a full bodied, velvety cream
encased in a flaky caramelized pastry crust, were one of the highlights
of my visit to Lisbon. The original egg custard tarts were first made
in Lisbon almost two hundred years ago by the nuns of Jeronimos Monastery.
The nuns opened a bakery in the Belem neighborhood of Lisbon using a secret
recipe passed on from the monastery.
